Through the TGA (thermogravimetric analysis) analysis of an elastomer, the individual constituents of the rubber material can be measured. For this, the rubber is continuously heated while simultaneously weighed. During heating, the material loses more and more of its ingredients according to the temperature resistance, first under a nitrogen atmosphere and at the end under an air atmosphere, in order to remove the fillers' carbon black. In other words, the elastomeric material is gradually decomposed and the mass loss is recorded.
Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH) is an EU regulation on chemicals, effective from 1 June 2007. REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals. As an EC regulation REACH is effective in all member states.
REACH serves the well-being of people and the environment.
"RoHS" stands for "Restriction of Hazardous Substances" and therefore for bans or restrictions of hazardous substances. This includes for example lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). All these substances are not included in RoHS-marked goods. The EC Directive 2002/95/EC is the basis for that.
The abbreviation "PAH" stands for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. PAHs are a group of substances whose molecular structure consists of at least three linked benzene rings. PAHs are part of tar, crude oil, petroleum products, but can also be found in and on many food products. Humans takes in PAHs also from air.
PAHs are, among others, released by car exhaust gases, open fire and also by cigarette smoke. Some PAH compounds are classified as carcinogenic.
